Golden Gate: Attendance, Ontrack Handle Rise During Winter-Spring Meet

For the first time since 2011, the Golden Gate Fields winter-spring meet showed increases in both attendance and ontrack handle, the track reported.

The 99-day meet concluded Sunday with a 5.65 percent increase in attendance, led by a 13 percent increase on the popular Dollar Day Sundays, and a 3.44 percent increase in ontrack handle.

Abel Cedillo won the jockey championship with 89 victories in the first extended meeting of the post-Russell Baze era.

Irving Orozco edged William Antongeorgi III for second, 74-73, with Frank Alvarado finishing fourth over Juan Hernandez, 68-67.

John Martin captured the training title with 62 wins after winning the 2016 fall meeting title.

Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was second with 57 victories followed by Blaine Wright with 38 and Tim McCanna and Bill Delia tied with 30 wins.

Mended led horses with six wins during the meeting. If You Like It, Southern Treasure, and Midnight Rambler each reached the winner’s circle five times.
